13,000 Acres, Built in the 1970s
The lake is younger than a lot of the people who love it. In 1968, Virginia Electric and Power Company bought 18,000 acres and built a 9,600-acre reservoir alongside the 3,400-acre North Anna Waste Heat Treatment Facility.
Dominion Energy now lists Lake Anna at 13,000 acres, 72 miles south of Washington, D.C. Its predecessor made the lake in the 1970s to cool the North Anna Power Station.
Louisa holds the biggest share. The Lake Anna Civic Association puts more than half of the lake and its watershed in Louisa County, a quarter in Orange and a fifth in Spotsylvania.
Bass, Beaches and a Gold Mine on Lawyers Road
Ask anyone with a boat and they'll tell you: Lake Anna is a largemouth bass lake. Crappie and bream keep the rest of the family busy.
On shore, Lake Anna State Park sits at 6800 Lawyers Road with a public boat launch, kayak rentals, a swimming beach, more than 15 miles of trails and 46 campsites.
The park covers 3,127 acres and 10 miles of lake frontage on the Spotsylvania side. It sits on the old Gold Hill area, where the Goodwin Gold Mine found gold in 1829, and the park still runs Goodwin Gold Mine tours from its visitor center.
Routes 208, 22 and 522, and the Water Under Your House
Getting to the lake means State Routes 208, 22 and 601 or U.S. Route 522. Most Lake Anna directions start with one of them.
Water is the other thing worth knowing. The Louisa County Water Authority lists a New Bridge and Lake Anna well system among the systems it serves, and plenty of lake homes have a well of their own. Tell us which when you book.
Full-time house or weekend place, you get the same visit and the same written price up front.
